1. Surface Inspection & Suitability
- Suitable for mild steel, iron, and other ferrous metals.
- Ensure the surface is structurally sound and free from contaminants.
2. Surface Cleaning
- Remove rust, mill scale, old paint, oil, grease, and other contaminants.
- Recommended methods:
- Abrasive blasting to SA 2.5 (preferred for optimal adhesion).
- Power tool cleaning (e.g., wire brushing, sanding).
- Solvent wiping for oil or grease using mineral spirits or degreasers.
3. Mechanical Preparation
- For best performance:
- Use grit blasting to achieve a roughened surface profile.
- If blasting is not possible, sand thoroughly to remove oxidation and ensure better primer grip.
4. Dust Removal
- Clean off dust and debris using:
- Dry air blast
- Clean, lint-free cloth
- Industrial vacuum cleaner
5. Dryness & Timing
- Make sure the surface is completely dry before applying the primer.
- Primer should be applied immediately after surface prep to avoid flash rusting.
